Choosing your broker

How to Choose Insurance Agencies

When deciding which insurance service to go with, you need to understand that not all insurance agents are alike. There are certain characteristics you need to determine.

1. Ethical

Does the agent put the client's best interest above his/her own interest?

Note: The California Insurance Department requires every licensee to take at least 4 hours of Ethics Studies before they can renew their license every two years.

2. Product Knowledge

  • How well does the agent know the products he/she is selling?
  • Are there any new products entering the market?
  • Is the agent aware of the emerging trends in the ever evolving insurance industry?

3. Value Added

Does the agent provide more than simply a low priced policy?

Examples:

  • Does the agent explain the coverage in detail?
  • Does the agent support claims why his recommendation is the right policy?
  • Does the agent recommend risk management solutions?

4. Direct Access to Insurers

Does the agent have a close personal relationship with the insurer's representatives? Can your agent pitch your difficult case to the underwriters? Can your agent also request immediate processing of your application if it is urgent?

5. Hands on with Claims and Dispute

Is the agent prepared and ready to lead you through the intricacies of the claim process and stand by your side when you have a dispute with your insurance company?
